Earlier this year, ARC attended the FIDI Conference in Geneva where we learned about Operation Smile Honduras (OSH). Operation Smile an international medical charity which provides services to children with cleft palates. FIDI focused on OSH because these conditions are particularly prevalent in this part of the world. ARC’s donation will cover the cost of one child’s operation.
The children and their parents stay at a shelter nearby the hospital. Operations started on Monday 20th June and will go on throughout the week. OSH is hoping to operate 95 children in total during this week, of which 20 children have already been operated on Monday the 20th.
After the patients are operated, the doctors carry out a post-operational check and the patients can return to their home towns once given a clean bill of health. Some children are required to come back to the clinic in the upcoming months for check-ups, or more surgeries if needed. Accommodation and all medical costs are borne by Operation Smile Honduras.
OSH was officially launched at this year’s conference and the “Grand Final” will take place at the FIDI Conference in 2019 in The Netherlands.
