Tesla Relocation Package: What We Found (and What We Couldn’t)

A job offer from Tesla can mean packing up for Austin, the Bay Area, Reno, Buffalo or even Berlin. We help people from Tesla (and a lot of other exciting companies) to relocate for a new position or promotion. Here’s the reality: before you say yes, you’ll want to know what Tesla will actually pay to get you there (or what you can negotiate), and that’s surprisingly hard to find out. Tesla doesn’t publish its relocation policy, recruiters share details offer by offer, and much of what’s online is guesswork.

We created this page to share the real clues instead: what employees have publicly said they were offered, what Tesla’s own relocation program looked like in its early years, how intern stipends work, and what Tesla’s 2024 layoffs revealed about the risks of moving for the job. Along the way, we cover taxes, repayment clauses, and the questions to ask your recruiter so you can judge your offer with confidence.

Does Tesla Offer a Relocation Package?

Yes, Tesla offers relocation assistance for some roles, but it does not publish a relocation policy for full-time employees. Employee reports point mostly to a modest cash lump sum relocation bonus or incentive, with $5,000 the figure we saw reported most often.

Because Tesla keeps its policy private, most of the pages you can find on this either guess or repeat each other. We took a different approach. We pulled together everything public we could find: Tesla’s own careers pages, current job postings, relocation documents Tesla filed with the SEC, employee-reported offers from Blind, Levels.fyi, Fishbowl and Indeed, and news coverage of Tesla’s 2024 layoffs. Below is what each source shows, how much weight it can bear, and what to ask before you accept an offer.

If You Get a $5,000 Lump Sum from Tesla, Here’s Exactly How to Stretch It

Because Tesla’s relocation money usually arrives as a lump sum you manage yourself, every dollar you save on the move is a dollar you keep. After withholding, a $5,000 payment may leave you with roughly $3,000 to $3,500, so it pays to shop the move carefully. Agoyu is the solution to help you quickly and painlessly collect multiple quotes from movers without giving them your contact information. Here’s how it works:

  • Scan your home for an accurate weight. Long-distance quotes are largely based on weight, and Agoyu’s app builds an itemized inventory from a phone video. Decide what you’re leaving behind first, since anything you sell or donate lowers the price.
  • Compare quotes without sharing your contact info. You can see prices from multiple movers for your route without a wave of sales calls, then measure each one against your after-tax lump sum.
  • Ask movers to compete. Agoyu’s “Bid Out My Move” feature sends your move to its mover network and gives movers two business days to offer a discount. Savings aren’t guaranteed, but a flexible move date gives movers more room to come in lower.
  • Look for a guaranteed price. Some quotes lock in the mover’s rate based on your inventory, which protects a fixed lump sum from surprise overages.

If the best quote still comes in above your lump sum, you’ll have a real number to bring back to your recruiter before you sign. See how much movers are quoting for your move on Agoyu.

A quick phone scan gives Agoyu an itemized inventory and total weight, so the quotes you collect reflect your actual to and from location and are easy to compare with the lump sum you receive from Tesla.

How We Researched This

We gathered every public source we could find on Tesla relocation and labeled each one by how reliable it is.

  • Official Tesla sources: Tesla’s internship FAQ, the Giga Texas careers page, and current Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg job postings.
  • Historical primary sources: offer letters and a relocation agreement Tesla filed with the SEC in its 2010 IPO registration, covering executive hires in 2008 and 2009.
  • Employee-reported offers: 13 full-time offers posted on Blind, Fishbowl and Levels.fyi, plus intern data points from Levels.fyi and answers on Indeed.
  • News coverage: Business Insider and Bloomberg reporting on Tesla’s 2024 layoffs and rescinded offers.

Employee-reported figures are unverified. They may be outdated, and a dozen posts can’t tell you what a typical Tesla offer looks like today. So treat what we share here as clues, not policy. Your offer letter is the only source that tells you what Tesla will actually pay for your move.

Does Tesla Pay for Relocation?

Yes, for some roles. Tesla’s only official public statements on relocation cover interns and certain overseas factory jobs, but employee posts show relocation money in full-time offers across engineering, supply chain and software roles in Fremont, Palo Alto, Austin and Nevada.

Relocation is not guaranteed, though. On Indeed, a former PV designer in Las Vegas said the job came with no relocation assistance. An equipment technician in Austin wrote that relocation assistance he was told about never came through. Whether relocation is included depends on the role, and you should confirm it before you accept.

Current employees can receive relocation help too. A Tesla energy field technician told Business Insider in 2024 that Tesla asked them to move cross-country to cover an understaffed region, helped with the move, and paid a stipend.

How Much Does Tesla Pay for Relocation? What Employees Report

In the offers we found, $5,000 was the most commonly reported figure, appearing in 6 reports. Higher amounts, from $10,000 to $30,000, showed up less often and tended to involve homeowners, family moves or more senior roles.

These posts are self-reported and unverified, and most don’t include a date of hire. They are a small sample, not a market average. Several posters also said they were surprised the relocation amount was so low. While $5,000 may be below what candidates expect from large employers, it’s not uncommon for us to see companies like Tesla offering less in the way of benefits, because they maintain a steady supply of job seekers simply by virtue of brand affinity. In other words, the more people want to work there, the less a company has to offer in order to recruit them.

Will $5,000 cover your move? Before you decide whether your Tesla relocation offer is enough, price the actual move. Agoyu is a free app that lets you scan the belongings in your home with your phone, builds an inventory, and then displays quotes from vetted movers, so you know your real number before you negotiate. Beyond the Cash: Services Some Employees Have Described

A few reports describe Tesla providing services rather than, or in addition to, cash:

  • Relocation specialist, movers, car rental and serviced apartment: a Blind user said a P1-level relocation a few years before the post included a relocation specialist, professional movers, 30 days of vehicle rental and 30 days in a serviced apartment.
  • Temporary apartment: a former robotics technician wrote on Indeed in 2020 that Tesla provided about two and a half weeks in a paid apartment after their move to Fremont.
  • Furnished apartments overseas: current Giga Berlin postings advertise furnished apartments at special rates for people relocating to the area.

These reports suggest Tesla has offered services at some levels and at some points in time. We can’t tell you what is standard today, which is why temporary housing and movers belong on your list of questions for the recruiter.

What Tesla’s Relocation Program Looked Like in 2009

The only actual Tesla relocation documents in the public record are executive offer letters Tesla filed with the SEC before its 2010 IPO. They describe a “Tesla Motors Relocation Program” that could be used over 24 months.

Benefit (2009 program)Cap
Temporary housingUp to $10,000
Household goods move, including vehiclesUp to $15,000
Home-sale closing costs (commissions, realtor and legal fees)Up to $10,000
Area-overview trips and family visitsUp to $5,000
Spousal job search supportUp to $5,000

Source: Tesla S-1 Exhibit 10.16, General Counsel offer letter, August 2009

A few other details from this older program stand out:

  • Employees had to get three moving quotes if possible, and at least two. Tesla could issue a purchase order to the mover directly.
  • Benefits could be expensed or paid as a lump sum, with required tax withholding.
  • Employees who left within one year of receiving benefits were subject to pro-rated repayment.

Some executives received more. One offer added up to $4,000 a month for interim travel and lodging, for up to six months (Exhibit 10.14). Tesla’s CFO at the time could be reimbursed up to $70,000 in home-sale commissions and closing costs, repayable if he left voluntarily within 18 months (Exhibit 10.10). His relocation agreement also reimbursed rent up to $5,000 a month, grossed up for taxes (agreement text).

What this does and doesn’t tell you. These documents describe executive packages at what was then a much smaller company, more than 15 years ago. They are not Tesla’s current policy. They are useful as a checklist: temporary housing, movers, vehicle shipping, home-sale costs, house-hunting trips and spousal support are all categories Tesla has paid for before, and all worth asking about.

Tesla Internship Relocation and Housing

Interns are the one group Tesla publishes relocation rules for. Tesla’s internship FAQ says it provides relocation stipends to interns located 50 miles or more from their work site, and housing for select interns at Gigafactory Nevada.

Tesla doesn’t publish the dollar amounts. Intern entries on Levels.fyi give a sense of what recent offers have included:

Term and locationReported housing and relocation supportSource
Spring 2025, Fremont, CA$700/month housing, $150 transportation, company-provided relocationLevels.fyi
Summer 2025, Fremont, CA$2,800/month housing, company-provided relocationLevels.fyi
Summer 2024, Palo Alto, CA$933/month housing, $450 transportation, company-provided relocationLevels.fyi

Spring 2023, Reno, NVCorporate housing, flights coveredLevels.fyi
Spring 2022, Fremont, CA$2,800/month housing, company-provided relocationLevels.fyi

If you’re placed at Gigafactory Nevada, ask about housing early, since Tesla says it is offered to select interns rather than all of them.

Relocating to Giga Berlin

Current Tesla job postings for Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg are the clearest official description of full-time relocation support we found. Some technician postings state that relocating to the Berlin and Grünheide area is required, and that Tesla offers a partial financial relocation allowance plus practical help organizing the move. The same postings list furnished apartments at special rates and reserved daycare spots in Berlin for employees’ children. One Blind user reported a Berlin offer with a €4,000 relocation amount.

Short story: if you’re moving to the U.S. or Germany from another country, ask what immigration support is included.

Is Tesla’s Relocation Lump Sum Taxable?

Yes. For most civilian employees, employer-paid moving money counts as taxable wages under current federal rules (IRS Publication 15-B). One Fishbowl commenter discussing a $5,000 Tesla offer said the lump sum was treated like a bonus, with tax taken out of the check.

We found no reports of Tesla grossing up a standard relocation lump sum. The only gross-up in the public record is the 2008 CFO rent benefit described above.

What that means in practice: assuming combined federal, state and payroll withholding of roughly 30% to 40%, a 5,000 dollar lump sum leaves you about 3,000 to 3,500 dollars to spend on the move. A 10,000 dollar lump sum leaves about 6,000 to 7,000 dollars. Texas and Nevada have no state income tax, so moves to Austin or Sparks may net more than moves to California. Check with a tax professional for your own numbers.

Repayment Clauses, Layoffs and Rescinded Offers

If you leave Tesla soon after relocating, you may have to pay the money back. A Blind user who received a 5,000 dollar lump sum for an Austin move said it would be clawed back if they left within about a year. Tesla’s 2009 relocation program used a one-year, pro-rated repayment schedule.

The bigger question at Tesla is what happens if the company ends the job. During the April 2024 layoffs, when Tesla cut more than 10% of its workforce:

  • A Tesla energy field technician told Business Insider they had moved cross-country at Tesla’s request, with a relocation stipend, and were laid off about six months later.
  • Business Insider reported that Tesla rescinded some full-time job offers, including one withdrawn two days before the start date, after the person had entered the U.S. on a work visa.
  • Bloomberg reported interns losing offers weeks before their start dates, including one who said he had already spent thousands of dollars on housing.

One Blind user described a recruiter verbally promising 17,000 dollars in relocation that never appeared in the offer letter. The poster said they moved, were laid off days before starting, and that Tesla disputed the relocation. We can’t verify the account, but it illustrates a simple rule: a relocation benefit that isn’t in writing isn’t something you can count on.

California hires (Fremont, Palo Alto): California AB 692, effective January 1, 2026, reportedly requires relocation repayment terms to be in a standalone agreement rather than the offer letter, prorated, interest-free, and limited to two years (Relocation Today summary). If you’re relocating to a California Tesla site, look for that separate agreement.

Before you spend a relocation payment, find out the answers to these 4 questions:

  • How long the repayment window is, and whether the amount owed shrinks each month
  • Whether repayment applies only if you resign, or also if you’re laid off or terminated
  • Whether you’d owe back the gross amount or only what you received after taxes
  • What happens to the payment if your offer is rescinded before your start date

How to Evaluate and Negotiate a Tesla Relocation Offer

Tesla offers can be negotiated, though not always. One Blind user who was quoted a 105,000 dollar “generic” salary for a P2 role said they negotiated to 135,000 dollars with larger equity. Another candidate was told their salary request was already above the position’s maximum. Relocation is one more line in that conversation, and it’s easiest to raise before you sign.

Come to the conversation with a real cost for your move (Agoyu can get you actual costs), not a guess. Then ask your recruiter:

  1. Is relocation included with this role, and is it a lump sum, reimbursement, or company-arranged services?
  2. What is the exact amount, and when is it paid?
  3. Is temporary housing provided or covered? For how long?
  4. Will Tesla arrange or pay for professional movers?
  5. Are vehicle shipping and a house-hunting trip covered?
  6. Is there any help with home-sale costs or breaking a lease?
  7. Is there support for a spouse or partner who is changing jobs?
  8. Is any part of the relocation grossed up for taxes?
  9. What are the repayment terms, and do they apply if I’m laid off?
  10. If I need a visa, what immigration support is included?

Get the answers in your offer letter or relocation agreement, not just on a call.

Will a Tesla Lump Sum Cover Your Move?

Whether a Tesla relocation offer covers your move depends on where you’re coming from, how much you’re bringing, and when you go. A one-bedroom apartment moving a few hundred miles is a very different job from a three-bedroom house crossing the country, and the lump sums employees report leave little room for guesswork.

A few factors drive the cost more than anything else:

  • Distance and route: a move into Austin, Fremont, Sparks or Buffalo prices differently depending on where it starts and how busy that route is.
  • Home size and inventory: the weight and volume of your belongings drive most interstate moving quotes.
  • Timing: summer and end-of-month moves usually cost more than off-peak dates.
  • Extras: packing, storage between homes, specialty items and shipping a vehicle can add up quickly.

Luckily, there’s an easy solution–get your exact number before you negotiate. Agoyu lets you scan your home with your phone to build an inventory, then compare free quotes from vetted movers for your specific route, whether you’re headed to Austin, Fremont, Sparks, Buffalo or anywhere else.

Once you have a real number, compare it with the after-tax value of your offer, not the stated amount. If the gap is large, that gives you a concrete, reasonable basis for asking your recruiter for more.

Tesla Relocation FAQ

Does Tesla offer a managed relocation?

Most recent employee reports describe a cash lump sum that you manage yourself. Older reports and Tesla’s 2009 program describe company-arranged movers and housing, so ask whether any services are included in your offer.

Does Tesla pay for temporary housing?

Sometimes. One employee reported about two and a half weeks in a paid apartment in Fremont, and another described 30 days in a serviced apartment. Neither is a published policy, so confirm before you book anything.

Does Tesla pay to relocate current employees?

It has in at least some cases. A field technician told Business Insider that Tesla helped with the move and paid a stipend when it asked them to transfer to another region.

Is Tesla’s relocation package negotiable?

Employee posts show Tesla negotiating on salary and equity, and relocation can be part of that conversation. The best time to ask is before you sign.

Does Tesla pay relocation for interns?

Yes. Tesla says it pays relocation stipends to interns who live 50 or more miles from their work site, and offers housing to select interns at Gigafactory Nevada.

Do I have to repay Tesla relocation money if I’m laid off?

It depends on your agreement. Some relocation repayment clauses apply only to resignations or terminations for cause, but you need to read yours. Ask the question directly before you accept.
